The Hill House was built by David Lesly in 1839 on a Grant of land
he had received from the Queen of England. Mr. Lesly lived in the
house until 1850 when he sold it to Nicholas Miller whose family
lived there for 43 years. In 1893, The Hill House was purchased
by John Livingston Hill, and has been in the Hill family since then.
Upon the death of John L. Hill, his youngest son, James Riley Hill
inherited the house and in 1991, it was passed on to his son, Dr.
William G. Hill.
Abbeville, South Carolina, is known as the Birth Place of
the Confederacy. The first meeting to discuss possible secession
from the Union was held here on Secession Hill. William Hill, great
grandfather of Dr. William G. Hill, current owner of the Hill House,
was a member of the group that signed the poster calling for that
first meeting. Twenty men signed it and his signature was
immediately above J.
C. Calhoun.
A tour of the house reveals many items of historical interest.
The Hill House having been completely restored is now proud to share
its rich heritage with visitors.
